Deep in the rural Northern Province of the developing country of Sri Lanka lies the impoverished farming town of Mahavilachiya, where the people are friendly and the children are sweet. We visited one of the government schools there, Gamini Vidyalaya, to spend a week teaching English to some of the students. Despite their circumstances, the students are extremely hardworking and eager to learn, as is typical in Sri Lanka. However, we could see that unlike their peers in more advantaged parts of the country, their capacities are painfully inhibited due to the shocking lack of resources available/affordable to the students and staff.
